Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Microsoft Windows XP (Operating System). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Utility Manager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The local and remote desktop login screens in Microsoft Windows XP before SP2 and 2003 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) by repeatedly using the WinKey+"U" key combination, which causes multiple copies of Windows Utility Manager to be loaded more quickly than they can be closed when the copies detect that another instance is running.
The weakness was published 08/01/2004 by Nick Lowe (Website). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-2527 since 10/25/2005.
