A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Copyparty up to 1.8.1. This issue affects an unknown part of the file .cpr/. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Copyparty is a portable file server. Versions prior to 1.8.2 are subject to a path traversal vulnerability detected in the `.cpr` subfolder. The Path Traversal attack technique allows an attacker access to files, directories, and commands that reside outside the web document root directory. This issue has been addressed in commit `043e3c7d` which has been included in release 1.8.2. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
The weakness was shared 07/15/2023 as GHSA-pxfv-7rr3-2qjg. The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-37474 since 07/06/2023. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 1.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 043e3c7dd683113e2b1c15cacb9c8e68f76513ff is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
