Details
A vulnerability was found in Knowage Server up to 8.1.7 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function _countBIObjects_ of the file _/knowage/restful-services/2.0/documents/listDocument_ of the component HQL Query Handler. The manipulation of the argument _label_ with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Knowage is an open source suite for business analytics. The application often use user supplied data to create HQL queries without prior sanitization. An attacker can create specially crafted HQL queries that will break subsequent SQL queries generated by the Hibernate engine. The endpoint `_/knowage/restful-services/2.0/documents/listDocument_` calls the `_countBIObjects_` method of the `_BIObjectDAOHibImpl_` object with the user supplied `_label_` parameter without prior sanitization. This can lead to SQL injection in the backing database. Other injections have been identified in the application as well. An authenticated attacker with low privileges could leverage this vulnerability in order to retrieve sensitive information from the database, such as account credentials or business information. This issue has been addressed in version 8.1.8. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
The weakness was disclosed 07/15/2023 as GHSA-2j3f-f696-7rgj. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-37472 since 07/06/2023. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
Upgrading to version 8.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability.
