Details
A vulnerability was found in Tim Mann XBoard up to 4.2.7 (Forum Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Setuid. The manipulation of the argument line with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in XBoard 4.2.7 and earlier might allow local users to execute arbitrary code via a long -icshost command line argument. NOTE: since the program is not setuid and not normally called from remote programs, there may not be a typical attack vector for the issue that crosses privilege boundaries. Therefore this may not be a vulnerability.
The bug was discovered 02/29/2004. The weakness was shared 03/02/2004 by narko tix (Website). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com.
