Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Riverdeep Foolproof Security 3.9.x. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
riverdeep foolproof security 3.9.x on windows 98 and windows me uses weak cryptography (arithmetic and xor operations) to relate the control password to the administrator password which allows local users to calculate the administrator password if they know the control password and password recovery key.
The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2004 by Cyrillium Security Solutions and Services (Website). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-2555 since 11/21/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16327), Exploit-DB (24171), SecurityFocus (BID 10467†), OSVDB (6735†) and Secunia (SA11790†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
