phpGroupWare before 0.9.16.002 transmits the (1) header admin and (2) setup passwords in plaintext via cookies, which allows remote attackers to sniff passwords.
The weakness was disclosed 07/27/2004 (Website). The advisory is shared at freshmeat.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-2578 since 11/28/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12110 (PHPGroupWare Plaintext Cookie Authentication Credentials Information Disclosure Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 0.9.16.002 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be adding authentication.
