Grub2 HTTP Header out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Grub2. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component HTTP Header Handler. This manipulation causes out-of-bounds write. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2022-28734. The attack may be initiated remotely. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Grub2 (affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component HTTP Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Out-of-bounds write when handling split HTTP headers; When handling split HTTP headers, GRUB2 HTTP code accidentally moves its internal data buffer point by one position. This can lead to a out-of-bound write further when parsing the HTTP request, writing a NULL byte past the buffer. It's conceivable that an attacker controlled set of packets can lead to corruption of the GRUB2's internal memory metadata.

The weakness was presented 07/20/2023. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-28734 since 04/05/2022. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236637 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0164: grub2, mokutil, shim, and shim-unsigned-x64 (ALINUX3-SA-2022:0164)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
