Linux Kernel 2.6.16.12 Netfilter SCTP Packet without Chunk infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.12 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Netfilter. Performing a manipulation as part of SCTP Packet without Chunk results in infinite loop. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1527. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.12 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part of the component Netfilter. The manipulation as part of a SCTP Packet without Chunk leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The SCTP-netfilter code in Linux kernel before 2.6.16.13 allows remote attackers to trigger a denial of service (infinite loop) via unknown vectors that cause an invalid SCTP chunk size to be processed by the for_each_sctp_chunk function.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 07/03/2006 by George A. Theall (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-1527. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 44 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21333 (Linux SCTP Functionality Multiple Remote DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Denial of Service.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26194), Tenable (21333), SecurityFocus (BID 17806†), OSVDB (25229†) and Secunia (SA19926†). Similar entries are available at VDB-2198 and VDB-30969. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
