A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel up to 2003 on Asian System (Spreadsheet Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Document Repair Style Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in certain Asian language versions of Microsoft Excel might allow user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted STYLE record in a spreadsheet that triggers the overflow when the user attempts to repair the document or selects the "Style" option, as demonstrated by nanika.xls. NOTE: Microsoft has confirmed to CVE via e-mail that this is different than the other Excel vulnerabilities announced before 20060707, including CVE-2006-3059 and CVE-2006-3086.
The bug was discovered 07/03/2006. The weakness was disclosed 07/06/2006 by nanika as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-3431 since 07/07/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22539 (MS06-058 / MS06-059 / MS06-0060 / MS06-062: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Allow Remote Code Execution (924163 / 924164 / 924554 / 922581) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110045 (Microsoft Excel Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS06-059)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 7024. In this case the pattern |93 02| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4569.
