GNU GIMP up to 2.3.9 XCF File xcf_load_vector memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GNU GIMP 2.2.6/2.2.8/2.2.9/2.2.11/2.3.9 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function xcf_load_vector of the component XCF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the xcf_load_vector function in app/xcf/xcf-load.c for gimp before 2.2.12 allows user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via an XCF file with a large num_axes value in the VECTORS property.

The bug was discovered 07/06/2006. The weakness was shared 07/07/2006 by Henning Makholm as Bug 346742 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.gnome.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-3404 since 07/06/2006. The attack needs to approached within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22106 (GLSA-200607-08 : GIMP: Buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115786 (Sun Solaris 10 Security Issue in GIMP(1) Leads to Denial of Service (1000054.1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gimp.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27687), Tenable (22106), SecurityFocus (BID 18877†), OSVDB (27037†) and Secunia (SA23044†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
