Details
A vulnerability was found in 2wire Homeportal up to 1500w. It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the file wra/public/wralogin. The manipulation of the argument return with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in wra/public/wralogin in 2Wire Gateway, possibly as used in HomePortal and other product lines, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the return parameter. NOTE: this issue was reported as XSS, but this might be a terminology error.
The bug was discovered 12/25/2003. The weakness was presented 01/20/2004 by Rafel Ivgi (Website). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-2749 since 11/13/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 26 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (14894), Exploit-DB (23562), SecurityFocus (BID 9463†), OSVDB (3683†) and Secunia (SA10666†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
