Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Debian Linux 3.0. This affects an unknown function of the file main.c. The manipulation results in symlink. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0996. In addition, an exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Debian Linux 3.0 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown code block of the file main.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:
main.c in cscope 15-4 and 15-5 creates temporary files with predictable filenames, which allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack.
The bug was discovered 11/17/2004. The weakness was presented 01/10/2005 by Jeremy Bae (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0996 since 11/02/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Shell File. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 29 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15989 (GLSA-200412-11 : Cscope: Insecure creation of temporary files), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115607 (APPLE-SA-2007-07-31 Security Update 2007-007).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18125), Exploit-DB (24749), Tenable (15989), SecurityFocus (BID 11697†) and OSVDB (11919†).
