A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft IIS 6.0 (Web Server). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component ASP Code Handler. Buffer overflow in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0 allows local and possibly remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted Active Server Pages (ASP).
The issue has been introduced in 04/24/2003. The weakness was presented 07/11/2006 by Brett Moore with Security-Assessment as MS06-034 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0026 since 11/30/2005. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1174 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90328 (Microsoft Internet Information Services Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-034)).
Applying the patch MS06-034 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12595. In this case the pattern Content-Disposition|3A| form-data is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4532.
