Microsoft IIS 6.0 ASP Code memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0 allows local and possibly remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted Active Server Pages (ASP).

The issue has been introduced in 04/24/2003. The weakness was presented 07/11/2006 by Brett Moore with Security-Assessment as MS06-034 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0026 since 11/30/2005. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1174 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22028 (MS06-034: Vulnerability in Microsoft IIS using ASP Could Allow Remote Code Execution (917537)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90328 (Microsoft Internet Information Services Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-034)).

Applying the patch MS06-034 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12595. In this case the pattern Content-Disposition|3A| form-data is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4532.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26796), Exploit-DB (2056), Tenable (22028), SecurityFocus (BID 18858†) and OSVDB (27152†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
