zola up to 0.17.2 handle_request path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in zola up to 0.17.2 and classified as critical. This affects the function handle_request. Executing a manipulation can lead to path traversal. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2023-40274. No exploit exists. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in zola up to 0.17.2. This vulnerability affects the function handle_request. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-24. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize "../" sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in zola 0.13.0 through 0.17.2. The custom implementation of a web server, available via the "zola serve" command, allows directory traversal. The handle_request function, used by the server to process HTTP requests, does not account for sequences of special path control characters (../) in the URL when serving a file, which allows one to escape the webroot of the server and read arbitrary files from the filesystem.

The weakness was disclosed 08/14/2023 as 2257. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-40274 since 08/14/2023. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2023-2384). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
