Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Xine xine-lib (Multimedia Player Software). This vulnerability affects the function pnm_get_chunk. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the pnm_get_chunk function for xine 0.99.2, and other packages such as MPlayer that use the same code, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via long PNA_TAG values, a different vulnerability than CVE-2004-1188.
The bug was discovered 12/21/2004. The weakness was shared 01/10/2005 (Website). The advisory is available at idefense.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1187 since 12/13/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/02/2019).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16398 (GLSA-200501-07 : xine-lib: Multiple overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
