Alertmanager handles alerts sent by client applications such as the Prometheus server. An attacker with the permission to perform POST requests on the /api/v1/alerts endpoint could be able to execute arbitrary JavaScript code on the users of Prometheus Alertmanager. This issue has been fixed in Alertmanager version 0.2.51.

The weakness was disclosed 08/25/2023 as GHSA-v86x-5fm3-5p7j. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-40577 since 08/16/2023. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
