A vulnerability was found in Notepad++ up to 8.5.6 (Document Reader Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function Utf8_16_Read::convert. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Notepad++ is a free and open-source source code editor. Versions 8.5.6 and prior are vulnerable to heap buffer write overflow in `Utf8_16_Read::convert`. This issue may lead to arbitrary code execution. As of time of publication, no known patches are available in existing versions of Notepad++.
