Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in LibTIFF up to 3.7.0 (Image Processing Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the file tif_dirread.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in (1) tif_dirread.c and (2) tif_fax3.c for libtiff 3.5.7 and 3.7.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a TIFF file containing a TIFF_ASCII or TIFF_UNDEFINED directory entry with a -1 entry count, which leads to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 12/21/2004. The weakness was published 01/10/2005 by infamous41md as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-1308 since 12/21/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/16/2024).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19184 (FreeBSD : tiff -- directory entry count integer overflow vulnerability (fc7e6a42-6012-11d9-a9e7-0001020eed82)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117960 (CentOS Security Update for kdegraphics (CESA-2005:021)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3595.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18637), Tenable (19184), SecurityFocus (BID 12075†), OSVDB (12555†) and Secunia (SA13776†). Similar entries are available at VDB-1419, VDB-1442, VDB-1441 and VDB-22364. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
