Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in ZBar 0.23.90. Affected is the function qr_reader_match_centers of the component QR Code Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A heap-based buffer overflow exists in the qr_reader_match_centers function of ZBar 0.23.90. Specially crafted QR codes may lead to information disclosure and/or arbitrary code execution. To trigger this vulnerability, an attacker can digitally input the malicious QR code, or prepare it to be physically scanned by the vulnerable scanner.

The weakness was presented 08/29/2023. The advisory is available at hackmd.io. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-40889 since 08/22/2023. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
