SCO OpenServer 5.0.6/5.0.7 memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in SCO OpenServer 5.0.6/5.0.7 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The NFS mountd service on SCO UnixWare 7.1.1, 7.1.3, 7.1.4, and 7.0.1, and possibly other versions, when run from inetd, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory exhaustion) via a series of requests, which causes inetd to launch a separate process for each request.

The weakness was shared 01/11/2005 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1039 since 11/16/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 12225†) and Secunia (SA13805†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
