The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the MSN protocol handler for gaim 0.79 to 1.0.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via an "unexpected sequence of MSNSLP messages" that results in an unbounded copy operation that writes to the wrong buffer.
The bug was discovered 10/19/2004. The weakness was published 01/27/2005 as Bug 2188 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.fedora.us.
