A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in SquirrelMail (Mail Client Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the file prefs.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. prefs.php in SquirrelMail before 1.4.4, with register_globals enabled, allows remote attackers to inject local code into the SquirrelMail code via custom preference handlers.
The bug was discovered 01/14/2005. The weakness was published 01/29/2005 by FraMe (Website). The advisory is shared at squirrelmail.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-0075 since 01/14/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:prefs.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16228 (SquirrelMail < 1.4.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12149 (SquirrelMail (below 1.4.4) Multiple Remote Input Validation Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
