Linux Kernel Netfilter Subsystem nft_exthdr_eval regs out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel. Impacted is the function nft_exthdr_eval of the component Netfilter Subsystem. The manipulation of the argument regs leads to out-of-bounds write. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-4881. Local access is required to approach this attack. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function nft_exthdr_eval of the component Netfilter Subsystem. The manipulation of the argument regs with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A stack based out-of-bounds write flaw was found in the netfilter subsystem in the Linux kernel. If the expression length is a multiple of 4 (register size), the `nft_exthdr_eval` family of functions writes 4 NULL bytes past the end of the `regs` argument, leading to stack corruption and potential information disclosure or a denial of service.

The weakness was disclosed 09/11/2023. It is possible to read the advisory at access.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-4881 since 09/11/2023. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/12/2023).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
