Details
A vulnerability has been found in Eclipse RAP up to 3.25.0 on Windows and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component FileUpload. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In Eclipse RAP versions from 3.0.0 up to and including 3.25.0, Remote Code Execution is possible on Windows when using the FileUpload component. The reason for this is a not completely secure extraction of the file name in the FileUploadProcessor.stripFileName(String name) method. As soon as this finds a / in the path, everything before it is removed, but potentially \ (backslashes) coming further back are kept. For example, a file name such as /..\..\webapps\shell.war can be used to upload a file to a Tomcat server under Windows, which is then saved as ..\..\webapps\shell.war in its webapps directory and can then be executed.
The weakness was shared 09/21/2023 as 160. The advisory is shared for download at gitlab.eclipse.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-4760 since 09/04/2023. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
