Summary
A vulnerability was found in GStreamer. It has been rated as critical. This affects an unknown part of the component Parsing. The manipulation leads to stack-based overflow. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-40476. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists. Upgrading the affected component is advised.
Details
A vulnerability was found in GStreamer (Multimedia Processing Software) (version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Parsing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
GStreamer H265 Parsing Stack-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GStreamer. Interaction with this library is required to exploit this vulnerability but attack vectors may vary depending on the implementation. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of H265 encoded video files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a fixed-length stack-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. . Was ZDI-CAN-21768.
The weakness was disclosed 09/27/2023 as ZDI-23-1458. The advisory is shared at zerodayinitiative.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-40476 since 08/14/2023. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 310734 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS / 18.04 LTS : GStreamer Bad Plugins vulnerabilities (USN-8205-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (310734) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2023-2401). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
