phpBB 2.0.11, and possibly other versions, with remote avatars and avatar uploading enabled, allows local users to read arbitrary files by providing both a local and remote location for an avatar, then modifying the "Upload Avatar from a URL:" field to reference the target file.

The bug was discovered 02/22/2005. The weakness was released 03/14/2005 by AnthraX101 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0259 since 02/09/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely.
