Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD (Operating System) (affected version not known). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function truncate/ftruncate of the component msdosfs Filesystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a insecure default initialization of resource vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-1188. The product initializes or sets a resource with a default that is intended to be changed by the administrator, but the default is not secure. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
On an msdosfs filesystem, the 'truncate' or 'ftruncate' system calls under certain circumstances populate the additional space in the file with unallocated data from the underlying disk device, rather than zero bytes. This may permit a user with write access to files on a msdosfs filesystem to read unintended data (e.g. from a previously deleted file).
The weakness was published 10/04/2023. It is possible to read the advisory at security.FreeBSD.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-5368 since 10/03/2023. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
