Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in rsnapshot Filesystem Snapshot Utility. Affected is the function copy_symlink of the component snap. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The copy_symlink function in rsnapshot 1.2.0 and 1.1.x before 1.1.7 changes the ownership of files that a symlink points to rather than the symlink itself, which allows local users to obtain access to arbitrary files.

The bug was discovered 04/11/2005. The weakness was released 04/09/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at rsnapshot.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-1064 since 04/12/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18045 (GLSA-200504-12 : rsnapshot: Local privilege escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 1.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (18045), SecurityFocus (BID 13095†), OSVDB (15420†), Secunia (SA14878†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1013674†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
