Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Samba up to 4.17.11/4.18.7/4.19.0 (File Transfer Software). Affected is the function sleep of the component rpcecho Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
A vulnerability was found in Samba's "rpcecho" development server, a non-Windows RPC server used to test Samba's DCE/RPC stack elements. This vulnerability stems from an RPC function that can be blocked indefinitely. The issue arises because the "rpcecho" service operates with only one worker in the main RPC task, allowing calls to the "rpcecho" server to be blocked for a specified time, causing service disruptions. This disruption is triggered by a "sleep()" call in the "dcesrv_echo_TestSleep()" function under specific conditions. Authenticated users or attackers can exploit this vulnerability to make calls to the "rpcecho" server, requesting it to block for a specified duration, effectively disrupting most services and leading to a complete denial of service on the AD DC. The DoS affects all other services as "rpcecho" runs in the main RPC task.
The weakness was presented 10/11/2023. The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.samba.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-42669 since 09/13/2023. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
