Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.5.2 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function igb_set_rx_buffer_len of the file drivers/net/ethernet/intel/igb/igb_main.c of the component IGB Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in drivers/net/ethernet/intel/igb/igb_main.c in the IGB driver in the Linux kernel before 6.5.3. A buffer size may not be adequate for frames larger than the MTU.
The weakness was shared 10/15/2023. The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-45871 since 10/15/2023. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 6.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at cdn.kernel.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
