Details
A vulnerability was found in kphrx pleroma (affected version unknown). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function Pleroma.Emoji.Pack of the file lib/pleroma/emoji/pack.ex. The manipulation of the argument name with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality.
The weakness was disclosed 08/04/2023. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-5588. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Applying the patch 2c795094535537a8607cc0d3b7f076a609636f40 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The pack name has been sanitized so an attacker cannot upload a media file called pack.json with their own handcrafted list of emoji files as arbitrary files on the filesystem and then call the emoji pack archive download endpoint with a pack name crafted to the location of the media file they uploaded which tricks Pleroma into generating a zip file of the target files the attacker wants to download.
The attack only works if the Pleroma instance does not have the AnonymizeFilename upload filter enabled, which is currently the default.
