Details
A vulnerability has been found in TETRA Air Interface Encryption (the affected version is unknown) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Keystream Generator. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-639. The system's authorization functionality does not prevent one user from gaining access to another user's data or record by modifying the key value identifying the data. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Adversary-induced keystream re-use on TETRA air-interface encrypted traffic using any TEA keystream generator. IV generation is based upon several TDMA frame counters, which are frequently broadcast by the infrastructure in an unauthenticated manner. An active adversary can manipulate the view of these counters in a mobile station, provoking keystream re-use. By sending crafted messages to the MS and analyzing MS responses, keystream for arbitrary frames can be recovered.
The weakness was disclosed 10/19/2023. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-24401 since 02/04/2022. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/11/2023).
