Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mnet Soft Factory NodeManager Professional 2.00. This issue affects an unknown code of the component NodeManager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in NodeManager Professional 2.00 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a LinkDown-Trap packet that contains a long OCTET-STRING in the Trap variable-bindings field.
The bug was discovered 12/20/2004. The weakness was shared 01/17/2005 by Tan Chew Keong as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0185 since 01/28/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Tan Chew Keong in C++ and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 28 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18937), Exploit-DB (761), SecurityFocus (BID 12283†), OSVDB (13027†) and Secunia (SA13881†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
