ca BrightStor ARCserve Backup up to 11.1 stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in ca BrightStor ARCserve Backup up to 11.1 (Backup Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the Discovery Service for BrightStor ARCserve Backup 11.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long packet to UDP port 41524, which is not properly handled in a recvfrom call.

The bug was discovered 02/08/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2005 by Patrik Karlsson (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at idefense.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-0260 since 02/10/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/05/2025).

A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 83 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118983 (CA (Computer Associates) BrightStor ArcServe Discovery Service Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3481.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19251), SecurityFocus (BID 12491†), OSVDB (13613†), Secunia (SA14183†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1013138†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
