A vulnerability was found in BigBlueButton up to 2.6.11. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function httpclient.execute. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a server-side request forgery vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-918. The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. BigBlueButton is an open-source virtual classroom. BigBlueButton prior to versions 2.6.12 and 2.7.0-rc.1 is vulnerable to Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF). This issue is a bypass of CVE-2023-33176. A patch in versions 2.6.12 and 2.7.0-rc.1 disabled follow redirect at `httpclient.execute` since the software no longer has to follow it when using `finalUrl`. There are no known workarounds. We recommend upgrading to a patched version of BigBlueButton.
The weakness was presented 10/31/2023 as GHSA-3q22-hph2-cff7. The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-43798 since 09/22/2023. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 2.6.12 or 2.7.0-rc.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
