Linux Kernel ksmbd parse_lease_state create_context use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel. The impacted element is the function parse_lease_state of the component ksmbd. Executing a manipulation of the argument create_context can lead to use after free. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2023-1194. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit. It is best practice to apply a patch to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (unknown version). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function parse_lease_state of the component ksmbd. The manipulation of the argument create_context with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An out-of-bounds (OOB) memory read flaw was found in parse_lease_state in the KSMBD implementation of the in-kernel samba server and CIFS in the Linux kernel. When an attacker sends the CREATE command with a malformed payload to KSMBD, due to a missing check of `NameOffset` in the `parse_lease_state()` function, the `create_context` object can access invalid memory.

The weakness was presented 11/03/2023. The advisory is available at spinics.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-1194 since 03/06/2023. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/21/2024).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at spinics.net.
