cURL 7.12.1 NTLM Authentication http_ntlm.c curl_input_ntlm stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in cURL 7.12.1. The impacted element is the function curl_input_ntlm of the file http_ntlm.c of the component NTLM Authentication. Such manipulation leads to stack-based overflow. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-0490. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in cURL 7.12.1 (Network Utility Software). Affected by this issue is the function curl_input_ntlm of the file http_ntlm.c of the component NTLM Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in libcURL and cURL 7.12.1, and possibly other versions, allow remote malicious web servers to execute arbitrary code via base64 encoded replies that exceed the intended buffer lengths when decoded, which is not properly handled by (1) the Curl_input_ntlm function in http_ntlm.c during NTLM authentication or (2) the Curl_krb_kauth and krb4_auth functions in krb4.c during Kerberos authentication.

The bug was discovered 12/21/2004. The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2005 by infamous41md (Website). The advisory is available at gentoo.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0490 since 02/21/2005. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 85 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17345 (GLSA-200503-20 : curl: NTLM response buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117954 (CentOS Security Update for cURL (CESA-2005:340)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19423), Tenable (17345), SecurityFocus (BID 12616†), OSVDB (14033†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-7235†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
