PX4 Autopilot up to 1.13.x CrsfParser.cpp CrsfParser_TryParseCrsfPacket buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in PX4 Autopilot up to 1.13.x and classified as critical. This affects the function CrsfParser_TryParseCrsfPacket of the file /src/drivers/rc/crsf_rc/CrsfParser.cpp. The manipulation results in buffer overflow. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-47625. The attack needs to be approached locally. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in PX4 Autopilot up to 1.13.x. Affected is the function CrsfParser_TryParseCrsfPacket of the file /src/drivers/rc/crsf_rc/CrsfParser.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

PX4 autopilot is a flight control solution for drones. In affected versions a global buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the CrsfParser_TryParseCrsfPacket function in /src/drivers/rc/crsf_rc/CrsfParser.cpp:298 due to the invalid size check. A malicious user may create an RC packet remotely and that packet goes into the device where the _rcs_buf reads. The global buffer overflow vulnerability will be triggered and the drone can behave unexpectedly. This issue has been addressed in version 1.14.0. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

The weakness was presented 11/14/2023 as GHSA-qpw7-65ww-wj82. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-47625 since 11/07/2023. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 1.14.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d1fcd39a44e6312582c6ab02b0d5ee2599fb55aa is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
