A vulnerability was found in phpMyAdmin 2.6.1 (Database Administration Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block in the library database_interface.lib.php of the file phpmyadmin.css.php. The manipulation of the argument cfg[Server][extension] with an unknown input leads to a file inclusion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-73. Multiple PHP remote file inclusion vulnerabilities in phpMyAdmin 2.6.1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code by modifying the (1) theme parameter to phpmyadmin.css.php or (2) cfg[Server][extension] parameter to database_interface.lib.php to reference a URL on a remote web server that contains the code.
The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2005 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0567 since 02/27/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
By approaching the search of inurl:phpmyadmin.css.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17221 (phpMyAdmin < 2.6.1 pl1 Multiple Script File Inclusions), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12153 (phpMyAdmin Multiple Remote File Include Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5250.
