Details
A vulnerability was found in Xen 4.15.x on AMD/Hygon (Virtualization Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component IRQ Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The fixes for XSA-422 (Branch Type Confusion) and XSA-434 (Speculative Return Stack Overflow) are not IRQ-safe. It was believed that the mitigations always operated in contexts with IRQs disabled. However, the original XSA-254 fix for Meltdown (XPTI) deliberately left interrupts enabled on two entry paths; one unconditionally, and one conditionally on whether XPTI was active. As BTC/SRSO and Meltdown affect different CPU vendors, the mitigations are not active together by default. Therefore, there is a race condition whereby a malicious PV guest can bypass BTC/SRSO protections and launch a BTC/SRSO attack against Xen.
The weakness was presented 11/14/2023. The advisory is available at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-46836 since 10/27/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xen.org.
