Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in vim up to 9.0.2109 (Word Processing Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Relative Ex Address Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Vim is an open source command line text editor. When parsing relative ex addresses one may unintentionally cause an overflow. Ironically this happens in the existing overflow check, because the line number becomes negative and LONG_MAX - lnum will cause the overflow. Impact is low, user interaction is required and a crash may not even happen in all situations. This issue has been addressed in commit `060623e` which has been included in release version 9.0.2110. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
The weakness was disclosed 11/17/2023 as GHSA-6g74-hr6q-pr8g. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-48235 since 11/13/2023. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
Upgrading to version 9.0.2110 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 060623e4a3bc72b011e7cd92bedb3bfb64e06200 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
