Summary
A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the file drivers/nvme/host/ioctl.c of the component NVM Express Driver. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2023-6238. The attack must be initiated from a local position. There is no exploit available. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version not known). This affects some unknown functionality of the file drivers/nvme/host/ioctl.c of the component NVM Express Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A buffer overflow vulnerability was found in the NVM Express (NVMe) driver in the Linux kernel. An unprivileged user could specify a small meta buffer and let the device perform larger Direct Memory Access (DMA) into the same buffer, overwriting unrelated kernel memory, causing random kernel crashes and memory corruption.
The weakness was shared 11/21/2023. It is possible to read the advisory at lore.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-6238 since 11/21/2023. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/15/2023).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lore.kernel.org.
