Details
A vulnerability was found in FHIR Core Libraries on CVE. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component package-decompression. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The package-decompression feature in HL7 (Health Level 7) FHIR Core Libraries before 5.6.106 allows attackers to copy arbitrary files to certain directories via directory traversal, if an allowed directory name is a substring of the directory name chosen by the attacker. NOTE: this issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2023-24057.
The weakness was published 12/12/2023 as GHSA-9654-pr4f-gh6m. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-28465 since 03/15/2023. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
Upgrading to version 5.6.106 eliminates this vulnerability.
