Details
A vulnerability was found in Jellyfin up to 10.8.12 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ProcessStartInfo of the file /System/MediaEncoder/Path. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Jellyfin is a system for managing and streaming media. Prior to version 10.8.13, the `/System/MediaEncoder/Path` endpoint executes an arbitrary file using `ProcessStartInfo` via the `ValidateVersion` function. A malicious administrator can setup a network share and supply a UNC path to `/System/MediaEncoder/Path` which points to an executable on the network share, causing Jellyfin server to run the executable in the local context. The endpoint was removed in version 10.8.13.
The weakness was shared 12/14/2023 as GHSA-rr9h-w522-cvmr. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-48702 since 11/17/2023. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
