Summary

Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in DFIRKuiper Kuiper 2.3.4. This affects the function unzip_file of the file kuiper/app/controllers/case_management.py of the component TAR Archive Handler. The manipulation of the argument dst_path with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity.
The weakness was disclosed 12/17/2023 as 106. The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-6908. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 2.3.5 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 94fa135153002f651f5526c55a7240e083db8d73 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
Unlike zipfile, tarfile's extractall does not check if a member is going to be written outside of the specified destination path, so it needs to be checked manually.
