Apache Guacamole up to 1.5.3 VNC integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Apache Guacamole up to 1.5.3. This impacts an unknown function of the component VNC Handler. This manipulation causes integer overflow. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2023-43826. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apache Guacamole up to 1.5.3. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component VNC Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Apache Guacamole 1.5.3 and older do not consistently ensure that values received from a VNC server will not result in integer overflow. If a user connects to a malicious or compromised VNC server, specially-crafted data could result in memory corruption, possibly allowing arbitrary code to be executed with the privileges of the running guacd process. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 1.5.4, which fixes this issue.

The weakness was published 12/19/2023. It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-43826 since 09/25/2023. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 260173 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2023-43826), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (260173) and EUVD (EUVD-2023-48191). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
