Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in oFono (version now known). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component SMS Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A flaw was found in ofono, an Open Source Telephony on Linux. A stack overflow bug is triggered within the decode_submit_report() function during the SMS decoding. It is assumed that the attack scenario is accessible from a compromised modem, a malicious base station, or just SMS. There is a bound check for this memcpy length in decode_submit(), but it was forgotten in decode_submit_report().
The weakness was presented 12/21/2023 as ZDI-23-1858. The advisory is shared at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-4234 since 08/08/2023. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
