Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Zend Engine up to 2.2.1a. This affects an unknown functionality of the component mod_cluster. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in the (a) Session Clustering Daemon and the (b) mod_cluster module in the Zend Platform 2.2.1 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via a (1) empty or (2) crafted PHP session identifier (PHPSESSID).
The bug was discovered 08/21/2006. The weakness was presented 08/25/2006 by Stefan Esser with Hardened PHP Project (Website). The advisory is shared at hardened-php.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-4431 since 08/28/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22273 (Zend Session Clustering Daemon PHP Session Identifier Remote Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at zend.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
