CBOR up to 4.5.0 DecodeFromBytes algorithmic complexity

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in CBOR up to 4.5.0. This affects the function DecodeFromBytes. Such manipulation leads to algorithmic complexity. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2024-21909. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in CBOR up to 4.5.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function DecodeFromBytes. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a algorithmic complexity vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-407. An algorithm in a product has an inefficient worst-case computational complexity that may be detrimental to system performance and can be triggered by an attacker, typically using crafted manipulations that ensure that the worst case is being reached. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

PeterO.Cbor versions 4.0.0 through 4.5.0 are vulnerable to a denial of service vulnerability. An attacker may trigger the denial of service condition by providing crafted data to the DecodeFromBytes or other decoding mechanisms in PeterO.Cbor. Depending on the usage of the library, an unauthenticated and remote attacker may be able to cause the denial of service condition.

The weakness was published 01/03/2024. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-21909 since 01/03/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

Upgrading to version 4.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2022-0486). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
