Linux Kernel ATA over Ethernet Driver aoecmd_cfg_pkts use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel. The affected element is the function aoecmd_cfg_pkts of the component ATA over Ethernet Driver. Executing a manipulation can lead to use after free. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-6270. It is possible to launch the attack on the local host. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version not known). This vulnerability affects the function aoecmd_cfg_pkts of the component ATA over Ethernet Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in the ATA over Ethernet (AoE) driver in the Linux kernel. The aoecmd_cfg_pkts() function improperly updates the refcnt on `struct net_device`, and a use-after-free can be triggered by racing between the free on the struct and the access through the `skbtxq` global queue. This could lead to a denial of service condition or potential code execution.

The weakness was released 01/04/2024. The advisory is available at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-6270 since 11/23/2023. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/19/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 212886 (CBL Mariner 2.0 Security Update: kernel (CVE-2024-49982)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (212886) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3251). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
